Happy Halloween from...

Zeus! I am proud to say I even sewed the white pants for his costume. Poor craftsmanship, but it got the job done. I can't believe it's been a year since his first Halloween. Oh my heart.

We tried on the costume at home, and Ferris promptly ripped off his head piece and ignored his lightning bolt. By the time we took him to the Zoo for some light trick or treating, he did pretty well! Whenever you take him out of his car seat, he pops his head out with wonder and optimism. Usually the showman in him outweighs any crankiness. (Except for seeing fully costumed people with big fake heads. He looked terrified and said, "ALL DONE!") He loved getting a Fruity Pebble version of a Rice Krispy bar and said "Mo!Mo!Mo!" He is talking so much more - phone, cracker, doggy (reindeer also = doggy), mine, NYOH! Tonight we'll try out the costume again and let him hand out candy to his new neighborhood friends.

Head butts!

Quiet Days

I just finished a rough week. Last Saturday Ferris was in the ER with an ear infection, and then I got a horrible cold that's lasted more than a week. Despite 2 (going on 3) sick days and a pharmaceutical shopping spree, my throat still feels like steak tartare. And today my eyes were diagnosed with a cold so I have to wear glasses and use special drops. My eyes! Yet somehow being home alone feels so indulgent. To be able to rest, and leave the house only for medicine and coffee.

The Sling Diaries: Delight

Delight was my biggest surprise.

When you’re pregnant, warnings abound. So I listened to the voices of experience who told me, "When the baby is born, it will be horrible. The babies think that days are nights and nights are days, and there aren’t any tricks that will fix it. You just have to wait out that first month.”

But horrible never happened. It was more like an uber emotional, better funded version of college. That first month, our little family had 11PM Conan dates, Dunkin Donuts for breakfast, afternoon naps, and glasses of champagne while we watched Adventures in Babysitting at God knows what time. Nobody told me how freeing it would be to let go of day and night. Clocks and calendars cause so much stress! The world stopped for us in those early days and I had never been so happy.

And then Ferris fell in love with the world. Trees, so interesting! Bearded men on the subway, so funny! Newman’s puffy tail, so soft! Frozen yogurt, so yummy! Being chased, so scary! I never knew how much I'd truly enjoy holding, wearing, feeding, comforting, learning, observing him. Motherhood felt nothing like the self-sacrifice I'd anticipated.

For a boy who was just a baby, fall is a primal and sensory season. Each day is a test of his lungs and limbs. At the pumpkin patch, he ran to see the horses and cats (of course), knocked over a sign, took a pumpkin from a little girl and then handed it back with great fanfare.

When he needs a break from his newfound independence, he cuddles me in the sling. We walk and dance together. Warm and safe, our bodies reminisce.

Changing Seasons

I'm excited to announce that Ferris and I are participating in a fun new blog project!

The Sling Diaries is a collaboration between Sakura Bloom slings and 15 mamas, each with a unique voice and a common love of babywearing. For each of the next six months, we'll all be posting on a theme that celebrates babywearing. I'm so honored to be a part of this community, and thrilled for the chance to tell our story. Not to mention it's a great motivator to actually be in the photos with Ferris!

You can follow along and meet all of the other lovely families at Marvelous Kiddo. She is giving away the 15th and final spot, so if you're interested leave a comment on her blog and a lucky winner will be chosen on Wednesday!

I can't wait to post my first diary later this month! In the meantime, you can follow the Sling Diaries on Pinterest, Facebook, Tumblr; and of course, keep an eye on Marvelous Kiddo for updates and giveaways throughout the series!

Oh, the places.

When summer ends, it's especially bittersweet for me. Last year, it was moving on from the season of Ferris's birth, and this year moving on from the novelty of so many life changes. Next summer he'll be expressing full sentences and who knows what else. Summer is my timekeeper now.

And now it's fall, more beautiful than I remember. Although in Minnesota, fall is abbreviated in favor of winter. We had fun walking around our neighborhood, which is full of colorful trees. And random cats who decided to join the boys for a picture (literally just walked over to them as I started to take photos!)

We spent a weekend in Des Moines and it was so great to get Ferris together with his cousin Zoey. In the past she was pretty aggressive, but she's softening with age. She wavered between kissing and a cold shoulder, which is much more gentle than their past encounters. They spent hilariously awkward time running around in crooked lines around the Des Moines sculpture park.

Oh, Ferris. So cute these days, in a distinctively not baby way. He uses so much sign language, and grabs things out of the cupboard, and seems so curious and finally started to say "mama." For ages, he would say "dada" just to mess with me and then laugh in my face.

He was reading a book before bed and I really wanted to get a picture. Like most full on photo ops, he was not having any of it, so of course the best picture of them all is when he threw the book in the middle of my shot. He looks like a frat boy in this shirt, I miss onesies.

And that was that.
