And for my dad...

This gets funnier the more you watch it.

Epic week

Well, in relation to epic vacation which is coming up next! I went to an Aerosmith concert at Jones Beach, which is a stunningly beautiful venue (even with Steven Tyler showing his drug ravaged mug there!)

Nick went golfing at Bethpage Black, which hosted the US open, and he has the ridiculous tan lines to prove it.

And, we finished out the weekend making Brie and Champagne fondue

ANNOUNCING EPIC SUMMER

Our summer of moving and hosting visitors and New Yorking is about to take a bump up to EPIC. But for now, a small taste of the ordinary:

Our family photo in Central Park, minus Newman; as you can see from the time stamp, we had a bit of unrequited optimism for the Dutch World Cup team.

I've developed a slight obsession with Julia Child since reading her book, My Life in France. Julie and Julia didn't convince me to buy Mastering the Art (though it did convince me that Meryl should've won another Oscar!) But Julia's firsthand account of her labor of love convinced me. So, I bought the iconic cookbook, loaded up the Netflix queue with The French Chef, and here we are:

Olympus Pen

Such a beautiful video, I imagine it took ages. I could never have enough patience to make a stop motion video, but so glad that somebody else did!

Visitors!

A tribute to the visitors who have stayed at our small apartment over the past few months!

My mom and grandma flew here on our moving weekend, and helped us out with shuttling everything from our old apartment.

Our old "temporary" apartment, ground floor, icky paint...

A few weeks after we moved in, my cousin Chloe and aunt Connie came to look at schools and do touristy things

Home Sweet Home, at last!

It has been too long since I painted my high school bedroom 4 different colors, and covered the walls with photos, "Got Milk?" ads, and sponge painted clouds. How I loved that room!

After years of futons (college!), Ikea (Minneapolis!), and 90's leather sofas and glass coffee tables with fake gold (Europe!), and nightstand placed 4 inches from tiny kitchen that fits one person at a time (New York!), I am pleased to announce that we finally have a real place! Although it is one of the tiniest places we've lived in to date, it is ours! For the first time, we threw some budgetary caution to the wind and bought what we wanted instead of what would merely function. Nick finally got his beloved flat screen, and proudly selected our living room paint color. I put my years of collecting coffee table design books to good use, and the longing I once felt passing Jonathon Adler, et al. is finally still.

Without further ado,

1) Apparently the painters weren't supposed to paint the door... but thank Jeebus they did, because a red door is an absolute necessity in my book!

If you're looking for a sign, look no further

Signs from Vermont:

My personal favorite, on a shop door:

Mmmm, how bout a bacon latte?

Photobucket

Ben and Jerry's state of the union

Photobucket

Ben and Jerry's parking signage, in the middle of a field (why?)

Photobucket

Don't dare to take the mayor's parking spot! But in case you want to leave him a note under his windshield, or assassinate him, you now know where to wait it out.

Vermont!

Nick and I jaunted to Vermont for a long weekend to celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary. The trip was a perfect mix of sightseeing, leisure, and breakfasting. I also snuck in a visit to my long ago employer's (Bruegger's Bagels) headquarters to campaign for the return of Tomato Cheese Soup, but the building was locked, so we just went to have breakfast instead.

On this trip, eating was not a mere subset of leisure; it deserved its own category. We found some excellent breakfast joints in Burlington, and even got up early on Monday morning to make a return visit to our favorite place before the Ben and Jerry's tour.

Nick, breakfast #1

Bucket o' Spuds (home fries, Vermont cheddar, sour cream, salsa, green onion)

Photobucket

PB&J (we bought strawberry rhubarb)

Lake Champlain chocolate

We also snuck in a brewery tour of Magic Hat, a local brewery that is much different from Budweiser. (see St. Louis post)

Photobucket

Vermont is famous for its cows.... sculptures were scattered all over the place.

Photobucket

Consequently, Vermont is also famous for dairy products, like Ben and Jerry's ice cream, which was founded in 1978.

Ingredients, without the clever package

Stephen Colbert has his own ice cream? Apparently.
