Like Steve Martin, without the dryness.

In the sense of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles!

Airplane ride #8 successfully under his nearly 10 month old belt! Playing with his flight accessories...

This was taken during my last month of commuting. For six months, Ferris and I sat just like this twice a day. I loved it. I loved it when he fell asleep, I loved it when he stared down strangers until they looked back at him, I loved looking up to see a car-full of people gazing at Ferris, I loved it when he reached out to hold a gangsta looking teenage boy's hand and the boy's face was overtaken by a grin. They held hands for 4 stops. A woman got on at 42nd Street and insisted on taking a photo of Ferris grabbing my face and earrings. The New Yorker in me hesitated about handing over my phone, but the Midwesterner in me won out.

Cheating here, because he doesn't have one. He does have a nice stroller and a good suck on a Mustang.

As I was (sort of) saying, Ferris gets around, most recently for a short trip to Minnesota. He has the good fortune of having people flock to him, ready to love, play, and laugh. We couldn't ask for more.

And back in New York, Central Park was just springy enough for me to capture his infectious smile and grass-waving ability. Sometimes he interacts with such understanding that I think he's so brilliant and surely he'll win a Nobel Peace Prize. Then, out of the blue, he starts sucking on my shoulder with such ferocity that I'm momentarily forced to reconsider.
Don't you love the onesie? We also have the Mario yellow star and red mushroom, but I never manage to get a photo.

They need a new word for happy.

9 months and new running shoes

We've just had two birthdays! Ferris is 9 months old.

At this point, you can't even distinguish which shots are the outtakes, can you?!

Here is what 30 looks like. Happy birthday to Nick! We celebrated at Del Posto, a fancy Italian restaurant owned by Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich. Unfortunately, we didn't bump into Joe, who is the best judge on Master Chef. We started watching the show when Ferris was super wee, you can even hear it on in most of the little videos we took back then!

And here is what 9 months old looks like. Goofy and curious and unskilled at putting puffs into his mouth.
Ferris has a thing for highwaters, or his mama has trouble moving on!
I used to wonder why seemingly normal people are always sprinting around New York City. Since going back to work after Ferris was born, my only workouts have been occasional jogs from my office to the daycare for a quick lunchtime hello. These are my running shoes. Therein lies the problem. We have some big events coming up soon, most notably Ferris's kidney surgery. So I decided to take a couple of months off from working instead of running myself, and my ballet flats, ragged. When I last had maternity leave, Ferris had just started grabbing his feet.

Today we went to the park, met a friend, read books, played on the floor together. Ferris went in a swing set for the first time, and tentatively smiled and giggled before preferring to suck on the front of the swing. He crawled toward the kitchen, as he always does. He pants with happiness, and his eyes gleam as he rounds the corner and sees the dog and cat dishes just ahead. Today I didn't stop him; I let him splash and kick the water dish until his clothes and the floor were soaked.

We're in Miami Feets!

I've needed a few things over the past few weeks: some laughs, a vacation, Oscar short films. Check, check, check.
Saw this on the way to work!
Had me laughing for a good 10 minutes

As for vacation, I saw a picture of The Standard Hotel in Miami and decided I just had to go. As luck would have it, Nick found cheap flights to Miami, so we booked a Valentine's Day trip. And what Valentine's Day trip would be complete without a baby? The Standard doesn't feel the same way: no kids allowed! So I was able to enjoy a spa day all alone, which was magnificent. Look closely and you can see my mojito in the top left picture.
This means I took my phone in the pool! Luckily I'm a good swimmer.

Sunrise view from our hotel - top right was my view since I didn't have my contacts in!
Party in the city where the heat is on? All night on the beach till the break of dawn? Alas. The closest we got to a party was jazz brunch with cocktails. The weather was nice but didn't hit 80 until the day we left. Ferris woke us up till the break of dawn. Parents of little babies need a different soundtrack.

Our soundtrack:
1 - We're in Miami Feets! (adapted from I'm in Miami Trick by LMFAO)
2 - Mama Got Milk (adapted from Baby Got Back by Sir Mixalot)
I like to suck and I cannot lie
You other babies can't deny
When a milk walks in with an itty bitty waist and two round things in your face
You get THIRSTY!
3 - The Babies Need the Burpies to Make Room for the Milk (original)
4 - Night Night Ferris (adapted from I Want Candy by Bow Wow Wow)

Our itinerary: lounge around, visit the beach for sunset, eat stone crab, tour the Vizcaya mansion.

And what Valentine's Day would be complete without a card for all of you!

We got set up for a beach picnic, and I propped the camera on a beach bag to take family pictures with the remote. Nice that Ferris looks away to give us some privacy. We're raising such a considerate boy! :)

Steps at the Vizcaya Mansion, a museum with a house from 1916 and beautiful gardens.
More beach photos, since I have so many favorites to share.

Ferris splashing in the pool:

Learning to climb. Note our <100% excitement.

That about sums it up! Have you noticed that since I've stopped sleeping, my mind only thinks in photos and I can barely string together a sentence? I think I need another vacation!

8 months!

Happy 8 months to Ferris! And Happy Superbowl to the New York Giants!

No thank you, Ferris!

Breaking news, Ferris pulled himself up to the coffee table yesterday! He is still crawling by pulling his entire body with both hands, but he's getting fast and adding a downward dog at the end. His favorite toy is the dog bone. Incidentally, Batman's favorite toy is the Sophie teething giraffe. His second favorite toy is the set of cords underneath the desk. I follow him and chirp, "No thank you, Ferris!" That's what they say at the daycare instead of saying, "STOPPPP ITTT!" I'm trying to follow suit.

Every day, I bundle Ferris up in a baby carrier, and we head into the subway, where Ferris alternates between flirting and sleeping. When we exit, we pass restaurants, bars, stores, banks, fantasy shops. Taxis pass us; we pass old women who carry small dogs the way I carry Ferris. How old is your baby? How old is your dog? Oh really, she can cross the street by herself? Ferris can't do that yet.

And some videos, since simply describing Ferris and his good humor would be cheating you.

Naptime, not going so well.

Ferris absolutely adores his daddy. Nick just has to walk into the room to get him smiling and laughing.

As for me, I need to work for my baby giggles.

That point is now.

We took the 7 month picture on time, so half credit for us! At some point, I just have to admit the blog is now 90% pictures of Ferris, 10% Nick and Erica doing interesting stuff. That point is now. So, here is the fam tooling around New York. We don't go to Times Square often- when we finally did, I had to get some pictures! Ferris seemed enamored with all the lights. Then again, 7 month olds are enamored by everything, aren't they? 30 year olds, not so much.

Remember the good ol' days, when we took a nice photo with 3 people looking at the camera?

High class problems

The year that I finally buy new snowboots (in advance even!), there is no snow to be found in New York, or even in the Midwest. For the first time in as long as I can remember, Christmas came and went without white. Even so, every day was the coldest day of Ferris's life. Har har har!!

Brown Christmas in Iowa
We saw so many people; it was exhausting and fun carting Ferris from place to place. One of these days I'll get around to organizing and sending the many pictures of Ferris sitting by the tree with people who love him...  but for now, I'll make an exception for Zoey. Little Yokozuna is almost a year old already. She has Veldhouse eyes. Can you believe these eyes glare at Ferris while he innocently gums on her toys?

My favorite, I love that her dress matches the doll's!

Our baby boy is learning out of order: he's been crawling for almost a month, but learned to sit a few days before Christmas, when Nick "took the training wheels off." Like most new skills, he's getting a mix of successes and non-successes under his belt.

This picture makes me laugh and laugh and laugh...

Don't worry, Nick caught him and all was well!

And some outtakes. Homeboy is starting to develop an agenda of his own.

Why yes, yes, it is a Christmas tux!!

We spent New Year's Eve with old friends, and had tons of fun playing games and eating Juicy Lucys. We are blessed to have people who will happily include a 7 month (!) old baby in a New Year's Celebration. Ferris woke up just in time for midnight, and sat by the piano while Erik played "Auld Lang Syne." I'm sad to see such a wonderful year come to an end, but am hopeful that 2012 will be even better.
